Alaffia is a venture-backed healthtech startup in New York City focused on claims operations for health plans. We are seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to own backend systems, contribute to architectural decisions, and raise the bar for our engineering organization. You will take ownership of complex backend platforms, collaborate with cross-functional teams, and apply AI-augmented development practices to backend architecture, system design, and cloud infrastructure.

This role works primarily in Python or TypeScript, depending on team needs. What matters most is strong, transferable backend fundamentals and the ability to pick up new languages and tooling quickly. We will find the right fit for your background on our team.

What you'll do: - Design, build, and own delivery of backend systems supporting our claim review platform, including data-intensive, production-grade applications - Contribute to technical direction and coding/design standards - Adopt and champion AI coding tools (Claude Code) in daily workflow - Mentor other engineers and share knowledge - Collaborate with product, data, DevOps, and business teams to scope and deliver solutions - Contribute to testing strategy, system health, observability, and infrastructure decisions

What we're looking for: - 5-7+ years of software engineering experience with a track record delivering complex backend projects, including large-scale API development and data processing - Hands-on experience with relational databases and data model design - Cloud infrastructure experience (AWS preferred), including CI/CD and container
