Under the general supervision of the Accounting Manager, the Accountant I – Public Assets and Grants performs professional accounting for the City of Independence, Missouri, including capital assets, grants accounting, financial reporting, and general accounting functions. The position maintains accurate capital asset records, administers grant activities, ensures compliance with federal and state grant requirements, and prepares financial reports to support the City’s ACFR and Single Audits. The Accountant I serves as a resource to City departments regarding grant administration, capital asset accounting, and governmental accounting practices.

Key duties include: maintaining capital asset records in accordance with GASB standards; recording acquisitions, transfers, disposals, depreciation, and capitalization of infrastructure, buildings, equipment, vehicles, and other public assets; reconciling capital asset records with the general ledger and preparing supporting schedules; assisting departments with capital project accounting and project closeout; coordinating capital asset inventory and supporting physical inventories; establishing and maintaining grant accounts; monitoring grant revenues and expenditures for compliance with grant agreements and budgets; reconciling grant reimbursements and ensuring receipts from grantors; monitoring grant reimbursement requests, financial reports, and drawdowns for federal, state, and local programs; reviewing expenditures for compliance with Uniform Guidance (2 CFR Part 200) and grant agreements; assisting with grant budget amendment
