Anthropic is seeking a Staff Software Engineer for Applied AI, Science & Engineering to build reliable, scalable software that enables Claude to assist scientists and engineers across fields like energy, materials, hardware design, and other physical-world domains. This is an engineering role first: you will work closely with domain experts to understand problems, prototype quickly, and build and harden the systems that make the work repeatable. You will help Claude carry problems from literature review through hypothesis generation, simulation, analysis, and design iteration; connect scientific computing and simulation tools so Claude can drive them reliably and at scale; design evaluations to verify Claude’s results with clear honesty about limitations; and sit with scientists and engineers at partner organizations to learn their workflows and translate open-ended questions into well-specified, verifiable tasks, then ship pilots into their workflows and build reusable components from successful engagements. You will act as the technical voice on Claude’s performance in science and engineering and collaborate with research and product teams to guide future developments.
