Toast is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to join the Orders Pricing team. This role owns how every order is priced—the rules, discounts, taxes, and service charges that determine what a guest pays. Our pricing engine must be correct at scale across multiple surfaces, from the cloud to the point of sale. You will deliver significant products and core capabilities across teams, serve as the domain expert for pricing, and mentor engineers to raise the team’s effectiveness. Responsibilities include aligning the pricing engine with Toast’s strategic roadmap as we expand into new verticals, designing and delivering large, cross-team features, driving architectural decisions for correctness and performance, and ensuring operational excellence with observability and incident response. You will partner with Product, QA, and engineering leadership to prioritize work, translate ambiguous problems into clear plans, and promote AI-assisted development. Requirements include 8+ years of backend experience, a track record of delivering significant products across teams, deep experience with distributed systems and microservices at scale, strong API design skills (REST, GraphQL), production ownership, relational databases and scalable data modeling, and excellent communication. Nice-to-have experience includes pricing, tax, payments, or other correctness-critical commerce systems.
