We’re seeking an experienced Senior Backend Engineer (PHP) to join our Engineering team in Bulgaria on a hybrid basis. This role requires in-office presence in Sofia or Plovdiv at least twice per week. Responsibilities include interpreting requirements and defining software solutions, identifying opportunities to improve existing products, troubleshooting and maintaining core applications and databases for performance and reliability, collaborating with QA to define acceptance criteria, creating technical documentation, writing clean, maintainable code following established standards, working effectively with globally distributed teams, and mentoring colleagues to share knowledge. Requirements include proven backend web development experience with PHP 8+ and MySQL, strong knowledge of OOP, SOLID principles, and modern software engineering practices, experience applying design patterns for scalable solutions, hands-on experience with unit and integration testing (e.g., PHPUnit, Pest), strong SQL, RESTful APIs, and GraphQL, ability to leverage AI-assisted development tools, excellent English communication, and comfort working in Agile environments.
