Position Overview: The Virginia Zoo seeks a capable and detail-oriented Accountant to join the Finance team in Norfolk, Virginia. The role may be filled at Accountant I or Accountant II based on qualifications. The Accountant supports core accounting, payroll, reporting, and administrative activities that ensure accurate financial records and smooth daily operations. The position requires meticulous data entry, timely processing of payments, and collaboration with multiple departments to maintain internal controls and compliance.

Key Responsibilities (Accountant I): - Accounts Payable: manage the accounting inbox, obtain approvals, reconcile vendor accounts, enter invoices, and process payments weekly (checks, ACH, and online portals). - Payroll Support: assist with bi-weekly payroll processing and record payroll transactions in the accounting system. - Month-End Close: support the monthly close process and prepare related journal entries. - Tax Filings: prepare Virginia sales and use tax returns and Norfolk meals tax returns. - Reporting & Administration: assist with annual reporting tasks (1099 submissions, tax-exempt filings, and audit preparation) and provide general accounting and administrative support (backup for Account Clerk, generate financial reports, and maintain equipment leases). - Other duties as needed to support department needs.
