Genomics England is seeking an experienced Principal Data Engineer to provide senior technical leadership across highly complex data engineering environments in a regulated, national-scale genomics setting. This is a hands-on, principal-level role that defines technical direction, shapes data engineering strategy and ensures scalable, secure data platforms across cloud and hybrid environments.
You will work closely with data engineering, data architecture, product and governance teams to design, build and operate robust, interoperable data platforms that handle highly sensitive clinical and research data, in line with governance, privacy and regulatory requirements. You will act as a technical authority across squads, mentoring engineers and influencing architectural decisions, patterns and standards used by multiple teams.
Key responsibilities include setting technical direction, leading the design and delivery of large-scale data solutions, influencing architectural directions for enterprise data platforms (including Lakehouse, distributed and event-driven systems), and driving adoption of modern practices (DataOps, DevOps, CI/CD, infrastructure as code, automation and observability). You will also work to improve platform resilience and operational maturity, evaluate new tools, and contribute to technical governance and communities.
