Anthropic is hiring a Staff Software Engineer for Environments Infrastructure in the United States. The Environments team builds and maintains the infrastructure that enables Claude’s reinforcement-learning workflows, including the frameworks researchers use and the agent runtime. As a Staff Software Engineer, you will design widely used APIs, frameworks, and abstractions; own the platform layers beneath every environment; and build tooling to help environment owners diagnose and maintain production runs. You will embed with research teams on a rotational basis, ensure resilience against silent failures through strong typing and invariants, and mentor engineers and researchers in adopting engineering standards. Preferred experience includes building infrastructure for machine-learning research or RL workflows, agent frameworks, orchestration engines, and tooling that verifies correctness. The role requires deep Python expertise (static typing, safe async, high performance), strong API/framework design sense, and experience with stateful distributed systems. This is a hybrid role based in the United States with offices in San Francisco, CA and New York, NY. The annual salary range is $405,000 - $605,000 USD. Visa sponsorship is available for some roles.
