Axel Springer, Europe’s leading digital publisher and a global media and technology company headquartered in Berlin, is seeking a Staff Software Engineer, Data. You will design, develop, and operate large-scale distributed data systems that power our media and advertising products. You will take full ownership of the system lifecycle, including architecture, implementation, testing, deployment, operations, and ongoing evolution. You will collaborate with engineers, data scientists, and product teams to define data models, pipelines, and APIs that ensure reliable, high-quality data delivery. You will work closely with cross-functional teams to drive improvements, propose innovative solutions, and raise the engineering bar. You will contribute to continuous optimization and performance improvements across our platforms and stay curious about emerging technologies. You will be expected to design and deliver resilient, real-time or multi-region data platforms in cloud environments such as AWS, GCP, or Azure, and to apply modern data and compute paradigms, including orchestration, schema evolution, and data versioning. The role requires strong systems design, software lifecycle management, observability, and reliability engineering, as well as excellent communication and collaboration skills with mentoring across disciplines. The position is offered on a part-time / full-time basis as an Expert contract, in a hybrid work setting with an emphasis on 80% in the office and 20% remote work in the heart of Berlin.
