Laurel is seeking an experienced Staff Backend Engineer to join the Digital Footprint team and help design, build, and scale backend systems for the AI Time platform. You will own backend components, shape engineering practices, and collaborate with product managers, designers, and other engineers to translate business problems into robust software solutions. Responsibilities include architecting and developing efficient, reusable backend code; improving performance, scalability, and security; mentoring junior developers; staying current with industry trends and proactively suggesting improvements and new features. You will implement automated testing and CI/CD pipelines, participate in on-call rotations, and work with Product and Customer Success teams to define requirements. This role reports to the Manager of the Digital Footprint Team. Location: Hybrid in Los Angeles, San Francisco, or New York (US), with in-office Tuesdays–Thursdays; remote in the US/Canada available for extraordinary candidates. Qualifications include a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field (or equivalent practical experience) and 6+ years of backend software development; strong experience with TypeScript, Node.js, AWS SQS, and MongoDB; nice-to-haves include Python (Django/FastAPI/Flask), Airflow, PostgreSQL, and NestJS. Domain knowledge in AI is preferred. Laurel offers competitive compensation and benefits, and is an equal opportunity employer that does not sponsor visas or relocation.
