This globally distributed group focuses on delivering a robust and feature-rich search experience, including improvements to Lucene and search relevance. As a technical leader, you will contribute to the technical direction and implement new search features, enhancements, and bug fixes. You will work with a distributed team on vector search capabilities and own the codebase, writing idiomatic Java (Elasticsearch is 99.8% Java). You should have professional experience with search or vector databases, familiarity with algorithms such as HNSW and IVF, and a strong foundation in core Java and concurrent data structures. The role requires autonomy, collaboration, and the ability to drive projects from design through delivery. Bonus points for prior Elasticsearch experience, open source collaboration, and cross-functional leadership. Compensation is base salary with ranges posted; stock program participation and 401(k) matching are available. The typical starting salary ranges are $133,100—$210,600 USD, with higher ranges in select locations (Seattle, LA, SF Bay Area, NYC Metro).
