Ermetix is a high-technology Italian vendor specializing in mobile security. We are seeking a Backend Engineer based in Piacenza, Italy (hybrid work mode) to design and develop high-performance backend services, primarily REST APIs, using PHP 8.2 and Laravel 12. You will contribute to progressively migrating legacy code to modern, maintainable architectures and optimize MySQL queries and overall application footprint. You will identify and resolve complex issues in development and production, participate in code reviews to ensure code quality across the project, collaborate with the AI team in Turin and the frontend team for cross-functional integrations, and document architectures and implemented data flows.

Requirements

5+ years of experience with PHP and Laravel in real-world product contexts; strong SQL and relational databases, especially MySQL (willingness to work with PostgreSQL); ability to reason about performance (memory, CPU, query optimization) in addition to correctness; experience with REST APIs and multi-layer integration; familiarity with CI/CD and deployment pipelines; proactive, autonomous, and able to communicate clearly with teams of different stacks. Nice to have: knowledge of Java, Go or Rust; experience with Redis or other caching systems; experience with message brokers (RabbitMQ, Kafka); familiarity with GCP and containerized environments (Docker, Kubernetes); background in cybersecurity. Ideal candidate: not tied to Laravel but know its limits; when writing queries think about execution plans; able to admit mistakes and reason about worst-case
